Let's have some fun
with things that rhyme
welcome Kids
it's poetry time!
Hip Hip Hurray!
Welcome everyone to Kids’ Poetry Club with me, Little Dazzy Donuts. I’m on my way into the Club ready for our episode. Queenie and Chicken went in early because they said that they some important work to do, and also that I should be ready to hear them on the local radio station … and so I’m excited to see what they’ve been up to. As I’m not quite at the Club yet, why don’t we take advantage of this time to do our Club registration? This is where you get to shout out your name and get a Club point for being here. So, on the count of three, shout out your name so that I can hear you through your phone, computer, or radio.
Let the drum roll begin. Here goes …. One. Two. Three! ….. Excellent!
Well, I just arrived at the Club, and so let’s head in and see what Queenie and Chicken are up to.
SOUND (Door)
Hi Queenie … Hi Chicken.
Queenie: Oh hi, Little Dazzy Donuts. Could you hang on a mo … we’re just wrapping up a phone call with the local radio station.
Of course. Take as long as you need.
Queenie: Okay, Tom, can you remind me again when we can hear the interview on the radio? ….. Ah … that’s wonderful. We’ll settle ourselves down ready to listen. Thank you again for this chance to be on your show….. Okay, bye! And say thanks to Art from us too!
Queenie: Sorry about that, Little Dazzy Donuts. It’s really exciting! Chicken and I were just interviewed for a section on the local radio station.
That definitely sounds exciting! Now, how did this all come about?
Queenie: Well, we were chatting to Sammy Showers when he popped by after his birthday treasure hunt. As you know, he does the weather forecast at the station. Anyway, I’ve always wondered what it’s like inside the radio station, and Sammy kindly offered to show us around. He took us around yesterday.
How wonderful. Did you have fun?
Queenie: We did! It was so much fun! We got to see the studio where the DJs sit with their big microphones. The studio is completely soundproofed, which means that no sound can get in or out of the room. Chicken and I even tested it. So, Chicken stood in the studio talking, and I was outside of the room and couldn’t hear a thing.
So, how did all of that result in the radio station wanting to do an interview with you?
Queenie: Well, while we were there, we bumped into Tom and Art … you know, the two amazing DJs who do the afternoon drive-time show – I’m sure you’ve heard of them.
I’ve seen their faces on the sides of the buses, but I haven’t heard their show.
You haven’t!? Oh, you should tune in. It’s wonderful. All the local news, weather, and travel, plus hit songs, requests, and dedications. It’s called the Tom and Art Drive-Time Show. I’m not sure why. Anyway, when we were chatting with Tom and Art, we got talking about Kids’ Poetry Club, and they thought it would be great fun to do an interview with me and Chicken all about the current competition.
I love the idea of you raising the profile of the competition. The more people who know about it, the better. That means that we’ll receive even more amazing poems and art. So, how did they interview you?
Queenie: Well, they called us – just before you arrived here at the Club. They interviewed us over the phone so that they could record it and then they’ll play it back on the radio when their show starts later today.
So, Chicken, you were interviewed too?
SOUND (Chicken).
Queenie: It’s okay, Chicken. I know you were a bit nervous beforehand, but you did so well. Nobody would ever know that you were worried – it turns out that you’re a natural in front of the media…. Oh, hang on, I think the Tom and Art Drive-Time Show is about to start. I’ll put the radio on quietly in the background so we’ll hear when they broadcast the interview.
While you do that, I’ll make us some tea and grab a packet of biccies. We can then sit around the table ready to listen to your interview.
Queenie: While we wait, do you have any poems we could listen to, Little Dazzy Donuts?
I do, Queenie. Let’s see which ones would be a good fit given that you’re on the radio today. Oh, I know – how about we start with this one. It’s called “15 seconds of Fame”. Not that you had just 15 seconds of fame – I’m sure your interview lasted a lot longer than 15 seconds. Okay, I’ll read the poem to you now.
I feel so excited.
I've always wanted to be
a star of the radio
or one on TV.
Now my chance has arrived
as a guest on your show -
I'll impress and I'll dazzle
sharing all that I know.
We're on in five minutes
so I'm clearing my throat,
drinking my water
and reading my notes.
In the years that I've waited
for this day to arrive,
I've dreamed of the moment
the studio's live,
the microphone’s ready,
the lights are all on.
I'll be beamed to the world
at the end of this song.
Then, you ask me a question,
but no answer comes back.
My eyes are all glazed,
and my mind is all blank.
My chances of fame
ended quickly that day.
When I forgot everything
that I'd wanted to say!
Queenie: Oh, I do like that poem. That said, I’m delighted to report that our interview didn’t end like that. Chicken and I both did a great job. Hang on, let’s turn up the volume and see what’s happening …
Tom: It’s 10 minutes past the hour here on the Tom and Art Drive-Time Show. So, Art, what’s up next?
Art: Next, we’ll hear from Dee with the local traffic update. Then, in about 5 minutes’ time, we’ll be chatting with Queenie and Chicken all about the current Kids’ Poetry Club competition. You won’t want the miss that interview.
Tom: First though, how’s the traffic for your commute home? Let’s find out from our eye in the sky. Over to you, Dee.
SOUND (volume down)
Queenie: Oh, we’re getting close now. This is so exciting – we’ll be on in just five minutes. Let’s pour the tea and open the biccies so we’re all ready.
SOUND (Tea)
Queenie: Before I forget, Little Dazzy Donuts, Chicken and I got you a little present from the radio station. Let me grab my bag…… Look, the nice people at the station gave us lots of nice goodies! See … we have radio station pens, and a bumper sticker too … it says “I drive home with Tom and Art”. Isn’t that fantastic?! Now, where’s the present we got for you? Oh, here it is … LOOK!!!
Oh wow! A t-shirt!
Queenie: And it’s not any old t-shirt. No, this is a completely new t-shirt and see … it has photos of Tom and Art on the front, sat behind their station microphones. Those are the same microphones that Chicken and I saw when Sammy took us around the station. And check out the back of the t-shirt, it says “I’m in the know … with the Tom and Art Show”. You will look so good walking around town wearing this t-shirt. People will definitely be impressed.
Thank you so much, Queenie. What a wonderful t-shirt! And this is all so exciting. It must be almost time for your interview to come on. I tell you what, while we wait, why don’t I read you another poem. Here, this one also fits well with our topic today – it’s called “The Answer Machine”. I bet Tom and Art asked you a lot of questions … and so this poem is all about somebody who has a lot of answers. Here, I’ll read it to you now …
If you're looking for answers,
you're at the right place.
I'm known as the amazing
answering ace.
I'll answer any question
you want to ask me.
You can ask me a hundred,
and I'll guarantee
to answer each one
and I'll answer them quick.
I'm the answer machine,
so lay them on thick.
I have answers on history,
geography, sport.
Capital cities and rivers.
I'll answer them all.
Quantum physics, maths,
science or art.
Don't ask any easy.
Make them tough from the start.
I'll answer your question,
and we'll sure get along,
if you accept that my answers
are frequently wrong.
Okay then … I think it has been around 5 minutes. Let’s turn the volume up and see if your interview is on now.
Tom: Thanks, Dee for the traffic update. Don’t forget, if you want the most up-to-date traffic news, just listen to Dee Tour here on the Tom and Art Drive-time Show.
Art: Okay, want to know whether to take an umbrella with you tonight? Well we have all the answers in a few minutes when Sammy Showers joins us with the weather forecast, but first, let’s hear from Queenie and Chicken down at Kids’ Poetry Club. Queenie, are you there?
Queenie: Hi Art! Hi Tom! I’m a long time caller, first time listener … ummm … no that doesn’t sound right … I think I’m a long time listener, first time caller … actually, you called me … so that’s wrong too. I tell you what, I think I’ll just say…. Hi Art and Tom!
Tom: Hi Queenie. It’s great to be chatting with people from Kids’ Poetry Club. We hear such wonderful things about your episodes and competitions. So, what’s happening down at Kids’ Poetry Club right now?
Queenie: Right now? Well, I’m the phone to you, Tom – but I really appreciate you starting with a nice, easy question. Thank you! Oh, and Chicken is here too.
Art: We were following the Summer competition, and really enjoyed the awards ceremony you organized. I think that the sheep did so well! Now, I hear that you’ve recently announced the Autumn/Fall competition – what can you tell us about that?
Queenie: Oh, I love the topic for the new competition. It’s on Gratitude – so we’re receiving poems and art on what kids are thankful for, grateful for, and appreciative of. It’s so uplifting. Oh hang on, Chicken has a great perspective on this too – Chicken, why don’t you tell Art and Tom all about it.
SOUND (Chicken)
Queenie: So, as you can hear from Chicken, we’re really excited about the competition. Oh, and I should mention that the closing date is October 30th.
Tom: That all sounds wonderful, and I’d encourage all of the kids listening to send in their poetry and art on the topic of gratitude. I know what I’m grateful for – and that’s the yummy salad that I have here in the studio with me. You really can’t beat a yummy salad!
Queenie: Well, Tom, if you like salads, you’ll be pleased to hear that Chicken and I have a vegetable garden at the back of the Club. You should pop around at some point and we’ll show you around. Why don’t I tell you all about it now?
Tom: Well, actually we don’t have much time.
Queenie: That’s okay – it won’t take long to tell you about our veggies. Things are growing really nicely. We’ve got lots of kale and cabbages at the moment, and the tomatoes are ripening too. You know what … I have a really nice recipe for kale, cabbage, and tomato sandwiches if anybody wants it.
Art: Kale, Cabbage, and Tomato sandwiches. Those sound unusual. But, seeing as you’re recommending them, why don’t you share your recipe with everyone now?
Queenie: Oh, okay. It’s real easy, Art. You just take some kale, some cabbage, and some tomato … and put them all between two slices of bread. And that’s your sandwich. What makes it even easier is that, if you remember the name of the sandwich, you remember exactly how to make it.
Tom: Well, Queenie, it has been fantastic catching up with you and Chicken, but I think we need to go now as Sammy is waiting with the weather forecast.
Queenie: Oh, hang on …. Before you go, can I say Hi to a few friends please? I bet they’re listening. I’d like to say Hi to Little Dazzy Donuts and Postie Dale and Bill Ding and Rhyming Rita and Donna Worry and Chef Katie Currant. Oh, Chef Katie – if you want me to show you how to make those sandwiches for your restaurant, just let me know.
Art: Wonderful. Thanks so much, Queenie, for joining us today … you too, Chicken. Oh, and can I say how much I enjoyed the Chicken Quartet in the Summer awards ceremony. I really enjoy listening to jazz, and the Chicken Quartet in my favorite local band. I hope we’ll hear more from then again soon.
Queenie: Oh isn’t that wonderful, Chicken! Okay, we’re off now. Let’s chat again real soon. Don’t be strangers!
Tom: Okay everyone – that was Queenie and Chicken down at Kids’ Poetry Club. Don’t forget to send in your entries between now and October 30th. Well, we promised you a weather forecast, so let’s hear now from local meteorologist, Sammy Showers. Are you there, Sammy?
SOUND (click)
Queenie: Oh my gosh … that went SOOOOOO WELL!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think you stole the show, Chicken – you made your points so well.
And you sounded really good too, Queenie. You both did such a wonderful job of advertising the current competition. I bet everyone in town heard that, and so we’re bound to get a lot of poems and art too.
SOUND (Chicken)
Queenie: Yes, Chicken – you’re right. We also did our part for promoting growing vegetables. That said, all that talk of our kale, cabbage, and tomato sandwiches makes me hungry. Ummm … perhaps we could pop around to the garden, harvest some fresh veggies, and make a batch of sandwiches. We can then sit on your deck and eat them while we listen to the rest of the Tom and Art Drive-Time Show. Do you want to join us, Little Dazzy Donuts? We have more than enough veg to make you some sandwiches too.
Definitely – I’ll be around to try a sandwich soon. You two head off, and I’ll join you in a few minutes.
SOUND (Door)
Well, we’ve made it to our final poem for today. It’s called … My Radio. I’ve always been a big fan of the radio. As a kid, I’d listen to local radio stations, as well as listen to the Top 40 chart, to comedy shows, and much more. That has stayed with me ever since. There’s just something special about listening to the radio … as we hear about in this final poem. I’ll read it to you now …
AM. FM. Digital.
I'm scanning just for fun.
I listen to a hundred stations.
Never settle just on one.
Sports talk, classical, 80s,
then jazz followed by rock.
In the afternoon, it's chart hits,
soft ballads and hip-hop.
I wake up to the radio,
and it's on when I go to bed.
It doesn't matter if I turn it off,
I'll still hear it in my head.
I'll tune in for the traffic,
and to hear the local news.
Or I'll tune into a far off station,
from a country that I choose.
I've listened since I was a kid.
For sure, I’ll never end.
When I'm all alone, and no one calls,
the radio's my friend.
Well, sadly, that was our final poem for today. Before I head around to the garden for a sandwich or two, let me remind everyone that there are lots of ways to join in with the club. If you go to kidspoetryclub.com, you’ll see a wonderful drawing by our Club illustrator, Dot Cherch, based on one of the poems from the episode. You can also see the PodSnack video and download the episode’s PodPack of activities. They’re all free. Plus there’s information on how to send your poems and drawings into the club, including your poem and art entries into the Autumn/Fall competition on the topic of gratitude – so, what you’re thankful for, grateful for, and appreciative of. You’ll find everything you need at kidspoetryclub.com.
It has been so lovely to spend time with you! Thank you for joining me, Queenie, Chicken, as well as Tom and Art from the drive-time show. I hope you enjoyed yourself, and hope you’ll be back for more next time the Club meets. Join us again next week when we’ll have a brand new topic, and new poems.
As always, let's finish with our short goodbye poem:
We've had some fun
with things that rhymed
goodbye Kids
until next time!
This is Little Dazzy Donuts saying .... keep rhyming!!!
