Episode 32: Together
After several months without seeing her friends, Queenie decides the time is right to invite a few of them around for an outside soiree and to chat about how they can work together to build a fairer world for all. Along the way, she calls Sammy Showers, and hears handy baking tips from Chef Katie Currant. There are also three poems on the topic of being together. Everything is planned and ready... but will anybody turn up?
Instead of including an activity pack to accompany this episode, we are suggesting that people listen to the episode, reflect on their own experiences and questions, and then discuss those with their family and friends. The PodPack will return next week.

Let's have some fun
with things that rhyme
welcome Kids
it's poetry time!
Hip Hip Hurray!
Welcome everyone to Kids’ Poetry Club with me, Little Dazzy Donuts. I’m just setting up at the Club ready for our episode. Queenie mentioned that she’d be popping in later, and I’m sure that Chicken will make an appearance once she has finished watering the plants in the vegetable garden. Oh, hang on, I bet that Queenie on the phone now.
SOUND (Phone)
Hi, this is Little Dazzy Donuts.
Queenie: Hi Little Dazzy Donuts. It’s Queenie!
Hi, Queenie. Aren’t you popping around to the Club soon?
Queenie: Yes – I am … but I just had such a good idea that I wanted to share it fresh from my brain while it’s still warm.
Well, that sounds interesting. So, what’s your idea?
Queenie: Well, I was just thinking how long it has been since we saw our friends. People have been busy doing their own things for so long now, but it feels like the timing is right to invite a few people around to the Club for a little gathering outside. It’s such a nice day, and it would be lovely to catch up. What do you think?
What a great idea, Queenie. I love it. We can puts some chairs out, serve some juice, and find out what everyone has been up to.
Queenie: Excellent. So, I’ll think more about this on my way into the Club. I’ll be there in a few minutes. See you soon!!!
I really like the idea of us being together again. I actually have some poems on that topic that we could use for the episode and, while we wait for Queenie, why don’t I read us one of those. It’s called Together Again, and it’s about getting back together after a time apart. Here’s the poem:
It has been quite a while,
since we were together,
and, although I see your smile
on the computer or phone,
when we’re done with our call
I’m back all alone.
My life’s like a jigsaw
with one missing piece,
and whatever I try
I feel incomplete.
I can’t wait for the day
when you can be here,
and I’ll hold you so tight,
while I hold back a tear.
So, travel by car,
by bike or by train,
and after such a long time
we’ll be together again.
Well, the timing of that poem seems perfect as Queenie is just arriving on her motorbike. I wonder what ideas she’s got for her little outdoor gathering.
SOUNDS
Queenie: Hi Little Dazzy Donuts.
Hi Queenie – it’s great to see you here at the Club. How’s it going thinking about getting some people together for a small gathering today?
Queenie: Well, I like the idea of calling it a Soiree. That’s a French word for gathering. I just think it sounds nicer to be invited to a Soiree rather than just a boring old gathering.
I like that, Queenie. So, a soiree it is. Now, what sort of soiree do you want to organize?
Queenoe: Well, I want a simple soiree. As we haven’t seen each other for so long, I really just want us all to be in the same place catching up. Of course, we’ll need a nibble or two, and so I’m thinking that I’ll bake something yummy for us all to share. Perhaps a cake.
What a great idea. Now, who are you thinking of inviting?
Queenie: Well, there’s Postie Dale, and Bill Ding, and Rhyming Rita …. Oh, and Donna Worry … and Sammy Showers. That sounds like a good number of people.
Well, if we’re doing it this afternoon, we better start inviting people. How about you start with Sammy Showers. You could give him a call now. Here, I’ll dial the number.
SOUND
Sammy: Hi, this is Sammy Showers: want to know if the weather will be bright or gray? Call Sammy Showers night or day.
Queenie: Hi Sammy – it’s Queenie.
Sammy: Oh, hi Queenie. It’s so great that you’ve called today. I was just sitting here looking at the phone and hoping that somebody would call me. With so many people stuck in their homes lately, nobody has seemed that bothered about the weather forecast. So, my days have been quite dull and boring.
Queenie: I’m so sorry to hear that Sammy. That’s partly why I was calling. I’ve missed seeing you!
Sammy: Mist? Did you say mist?
Queenie: Yes, missed.
Sammy: I don’t think so, Queenie. There’s no mist in the forecast. I’m sure of that. Hang on, let me double check for you.
Queenie: Hang on, Sammy. Sammy? Sammy?
Sammy: I was right, Queenie. I’ve double-checked, and there’s definitely no mist in the forecast for today.
Queenie: Actually, Sammy, I was saying that I’d …. missed …. you! It feels so long since I saw you in-person, and was wondering if you’d like to come to the Club later together with all of my other friends?
Sammy: Oh, Queenie, that’s such a lovely thought. I’d love to do that. It would be so nice to see everyone again. I’ve been inside on my own for ages.
Queenie: YIPPEE! I’m going to bake a little something for everyone to nibble when they’re here. Is there anything you don’t eat?
Sammy: Well, I’m all for a nibble! Let’s think …. Oh, I can’t eat mussels – I’m allergic to them.
Queenie: Okay. Fortunately, I wasn’t go to do mussels, so that’s alright.
Sammy: And squid too. I’m allergic to mussels and squid.
Queenie: No mussels … no squid. Is that it?
Sammy: Thinking about it, I’m also allergic to crab.
Queenie: Gosh, I better start writing this down.
Sammy: and clams … oh, and salmon … and lobster … and prawns too.
Queenie: That’s quite the list Sammy! Would it be safe to say that you’re allergic to seafood in general?
Sammy: You know what, it would be safe to say that.
Queenie: But, not tuna I assume. Surely you can eat tuna?
Sammy: Tuna? Sadly, I’m allergic to that too.
Queenie: Oh no!!!!! I actually only know how to cook things that are tuna and banana flavored. Okay, well, I guess that I’ll take advantage of my soiree to learn to bake something without tuna. Everything’s a learning opportunity.
Sammy: Thanks, Queenie – I can’t wait to see you later. I’ll drop by after the Club meets.
Queenie: Thanks, Sammy. See you soon!
Queenie, why don’t you call everyone else and invite them to your soiree while I read our second poem. Then, we’ll figure out what you can bake that isn’t tuna and banana flavored.
Queenie: Okey dokey. I’ll start calling now. Oh, hang on, here’s a poem in my pocket. I brought it along in case you went with the topic of Being Together.
Thanks, Queenie. Well, this second poem fits perfectly with today’s topic. It’s called “Meant To Be” and it looks at examples of items that belong together, just like we all do. Let’s listen to that poem now.
Like the roots in the soil,
the leaves in the breeze,
the crows making nests
high up in trees.
Like the trunk with its bark,
and the bird with its feather,
we were meant
to be together.
Like the boats on the ocean,
the tides on the sand,
the point on the horizon
where the sea meets the land.
Like the whitecaps on waves
in stormy weather,
we were meant
to be together.
Like the saucepan and lid,
the bread and the jam,
the butter and knife,
the eggs and the ham.
Like the salt and the pepper,
side by side forever,
we were meant
to be together.
I really like that poem. What a lovely ending – “like the salt and pepper, side by side forever, we were meant to be together”. That poem make me feel really glad that Queenie is planning her Soiree. Talking of Queenie’s soiree, let’s check in and see how it’s going. So, Queenie, how did it go when you called up everyone?
Queenie: Well, I’m delighted to report that everyone can make it! Isn’t that exciting? They’re all coming around after the Club meets. Gosh, if that’s the case, I better figure out what I’m baking.
I think you better. Seeing as you can’t bake your tuna and banana cake, how about we call up Katie Currant. She’s the chef who runs the local restaurant, and she’s also a friend of the Club. I bet she’d advise you on what to bake and also how to bake it. Thinking about it, I wonder if she has any ideas for rhubarb, there’s some you can use that’s growing right outside of the Club.
Queenie: Oooooohhhhhh!!!!! I like that word: rhubarb! RHUUUUUUUUU BARRRRRRRRRRRRB! Rooooooooooooob Arb! Rudyboodydoodybarb. What a great word.
Are you finished?
Queenie: Ummm …. Yes, I think so. Let’s call up Chef Katie now.
Great! I’ll dial the number.
SOUND
Katie: Hi, this is Chef Katie Currant.
Hi Chef Katie. It’s Little Dazzy Donuts and Queenie. We were wondering if you’d have a minute or two to help Queenie with some baking tips? She needs to bake something today, and is stuck for what to make, and how to make it. We do have some rhubarb here, and thought you may have a recipe she could follow.
Katie: Of course! Hi Queenie. Hi Little Dazzy Donuts. So, you have rhubarb? Well it’s the perfect time to use it. Queenie, what do you think about making a rhubarb pie?
Queenie: Well, I’ve never eaten rhubarb – but if rhubarb pie is sweet and yummy, then I’m all for it. Just so long as it doesn’t have any seafood in it as Sammy Showers is allergic to food from the sea.
Katie: There’s definitely no fish – at least, not in my recipe. It’s pastry and fruit in a lovely pie. I’d recommend that you serve it hot with ice cream.
Queenie: ooohhhh … the thought of that makes my mouth water. Can you tell me how to cook it?
Katie: I can – but I have to be quick. I have a cake coming out of the oven in a few seconds, and the restaurant is full. So grab a pen and paper, and write down what I tell you.
Queenie: Okay – I have them, Chef Katie. Fire away.
Katie: well, first you need to pick the rhubarb, clean it, and cut it into chunks. Then, preheat the oven, and measure out the flour ready to make the pastry.
Queenie: …. Err…. Hang on, I’m writing as fast as I can. I’ve written down “measure the flour”. What came before that?
Katie: Then, to make the pastry, combine your flour, water, and salt. Then add your shortening.
Queenie: Oh my gosh. I heard flowers. There are flowers in this as well as fruit? I better write it down just in case.
Katie: Then mix in some iced water, and form two balls – one will form the bottom of the pie, and the other is for the top.
Queenie: Err …. I definitely heard iced top and bottom. I’ll write that down.
Katie: Then, roll out the ball of pastry for the bottom of the pie, and put it in your pie dish. Then make your filling by combining the rhubarb with some thickener, like flour, and add sugar too.
Queenie: Did you say thickener? Oh my gosh, what am I thickening? And we’re adding more flowers? Who knew there were so many flowers in a fruit pie?
Katie: Then put the filling into the pie, roll the pastry to make the top, and then bake the pie.
Queenie: Did you say roll the top? What top?
Katie: Then, most importantly, check the pie while it’s in the oven. It’s really important that you check it, check it, check it.
Queenie: Check it? What for? What am I checking it for? Am I checking that it’s still in there?
Katie: Well, good luck Queenie. If you follow my instructions, your rhubarb pie will turn out great. Now, I have to dash, I have a cake to get out!
Queenie: Chef Katie? Chef Katie? Oh gosh! She’s gone!
So, Queenie, do you feel ready to make your pie now?
Queenie: Well, I think I got half of the recipe written down, and so I’ll probably make half a pie. I’m going to head into the kitchen now and start work.
I tell you what, while you do that, I’ll read our final poem of the episode. This one is called “Knock on my Door”, and it’s about the excitement of having somebody come around after not seeing anyone for a long time. But how do you think this final poem will arrive? How do you think the Poetry Postal Service will deliver our final poem? Listen carefully. Here it comes …
Oooohhhh… it came by taxi. What a lovely way for a poem to arrive! Well, now it’s here, let’s listen to “Knock on my Door”.
There’s a knock on the door!
Who could it be,
standing on my doorstep
calling on me?
It could be a relative,
or maybe a friend.
Does this mean that my drought
has finally come to at an end?
Their rat-a-tat-tat
is a wonderful sound.
For months now, there’s just been
nobody around.
For so long, I’d forgotten
how great it can be
to have somebody here
in the same place as me!
Ummm ... I wonder who’s out there?
I’m excited to see!
A real human being
has visited me.
The excitement has my heart
beating clear out of my chest!
I better open the door
before I find out they’ve left!
Well, sadly, that was our final poem for today’s episode.
SOUND
Queenie , how’s it going with your rhubarb pie?
Queenie: Well, I’ve followed Chef Katie’s recipe … and it doesn’t look much like a pie. Still, whatever it is, it’s in the oven baking now. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter what it’s like as the most important thing is that all my friends will be back together in-person. I can’t wait for them to arrive.
While I say goodbye to everyone at the Club, why don’t you listen out for a knock at our door so you’re ready to open it?
Don’t forget that there are lots of ways to join in with the club. If you go to kidspoetryclub.com, you’ll see a wonderful drawing by our Club illustrator, Dot Cherch. You can also see the PodSnack video for the episode and download the episode’s PodPack of activities. They’re all free. Plus there’s information on how to send your poems and drawings into the club, including how to enter your poetry and art into the Summer competition on the topic of Home. It has been so lovely to spend time with you! Thank you for joining me, Queenie, Sammy Showers, and Chef Katie Currant. I hope you enjoyed yourself, and hope you’ll be back for more next time the Club meets. Join us again next week when we’ll have a new topic and more fun.
As always, let's finish with our short goodbye poem:
We've had some fun
with things that rhymed
goodbye Kids
until next time!
This is Little Dazzy Donuts saying .... keep rhyming!!!
So, Queenie – any sign of anyone?
Queenie: Not yet. Oh my gosh. I hope someone comes. What if they’re not able to make it? I’ve missed seeing them all sooooo much………… They will come won’t they?
Silence
SOUND: Knock!!!!
Queenie: Oh my gosh, they’re here. They’re here! They’re finally here!!!!!!!!!
SOUND: Door opening!
Queenie: Hi everyone!!!!!!! I’ve missed you all so much! I’ve got some ideas on how we can take action, and I bet you do too. Oh, and I’ve made you a sort of pie! Little Dazzy Donuts … Chicken … look who’s here!
